Tanzania PAYE Calculator
Turn a gross salary into take-home pay using current TRA mainland bands — your PAYE income tax, NSSF and net pay, in one go. Free, and nothing is stored.
Tanzania mainland · TZS · monthly
Your 10% NSSF contribution is deducted before PAYE, so tax is charged on the rest. The first TZS 270,000 is tax-free. These are mainland rates — Zanzibar's bands differ.

02From gross to take-home
Tanzania lets your NSSF reduce your tax: the 10% employee contribution comes off your gross before PAYE is worked out. Your employer matches that 10% and also pays a 3.5% Skills Development Levy — neither touches your take-home.
What lands in your account is therefore your gross, minus PAYE on the post-NSSF figure, minus the NSSF itself.
03Common questions
How is PAYE calculated in Tanzania?
Your 10% NSSF contribution is deducted from gross pay first; PAYE is then charged on the rest using the mainland bands — nothing on the first TZS 270,000, then 8%, 20%, 25% and 30% on higher slices. Each rate applies only to the income within its band.
Is NSSF deducted before PAYE in Tanzania?
Yes. The employee's 10% NSSF or PSSSF contribution is an allowable deduction, so PAYE is charged on your gross pay minus NSSF — which lowers your tax.
What is the tax-free salary in Tanzania?
The first TZS 270,000 of monthly taxable income is tax-free. PAYE only applies above that, starting at 8%.
What is SDL and does it reduce my pay?
The Skills Development Levy is 3.5% of payroll, paid by employers with 10 or more staff. It's an employer cost and is not deducted from your take-home pay.
What is the take-home on a TZS 1,000,000 salary?
On TZS 1,000,000 gross, NSSF is TZS 100,000 and PAYE about TZS 103,000, leaving roughly TZS 797,000 take-home. Use the calculator above for your exact figure.
Does this apply to Zanzibar?
No — this calculator uses Tanzania mainland rates. Zanzibar operates a different PAYE schedule, so check Zanzibar rates separately if you're employed there.
